Pirate stories abound in Baja California. Some true,
others...well, maybe not exactly true. True it is that Thomas
Cavendish sacked the "invincible" galleon Santa Ana off Cape San
Lucas in 1587.
And true it is that a number of "Dutch Hens" entered the
Skull and Crossbones trade against the haughty Spanish. Joris van
Spilbergen was the most famous of the group.
Pirates Buried
Treasure
at Rancho El Gaspareņo
It is well
documented history that notorious pirates roamed, sailed and plundered
in the cape area for almost 300 years. During these periods pirates were
mainly of Dutch, Spanish, English, Chilean origin. In the periods from
the mid 1500's to the 1800's over 250 Spanish Gallons Leighton with
their super cargos of various valuable natures from the Philippines
[named Manila Galleons] passed through and stopped in the cape areas to
prepare for their trips to Acapulco, the headquarters for new Spain and
then on to Spain. Many tales of fighting, plundering are well documented
in history. As recent as 1974 while building the road to Pichelinque,
the out of town road to the ferry terminal near la Paz, a pirate chest
of plundered loot was discovered by road
workers.
Cave featured in Local School Outings: Many
local school trips bring classes to the cave pictured to the left and
tell the well known stories of long ago
Will you find the treasure? As the tide pushes sand and
takes the sand from the cave, it is possible the treasure is buried deep
Parts of the year the tide and waves come crashing into the cave,
making it bigger as time progresses.
*Regarding Rancho El
Gaspareņo. Located inside of the point, the rock hill on the southwest
corner of the property, is a cave that can be accessed from the beach at
low tides. It has at times a very high ceiling. Legend has it there is
pirates treasure buried somewhere in the cave, and with the history and
confirmation of Pirates in the area, this just could be true. The cave
goes back approximately 100 feet plus, into the rock, with sand coming
in and out with the different tides. The height of the cave can vary
drastically depending on the time of the year and the height of the
waves and tides which carry sand in and out.
Racing up and down the Pacific coastline,
the Pirates had a field day. And when they were not plying their trade
they were hanging out at Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo and La
Paz, Baja California Sur, just R & R-ing-it - and maybe stashing a
little treasure. The Spanish of course, were not happy. The only people
taking any spoils out of the new world were the English and the Dutch
and they didn't know how to get there until a Portuguese named Magellan
showed 'em the route.
