Hiking
A long walk
on the beach is certainly a beautiful hike at Rancho El Gaspareņo, but
a trek through the desert is equally spectacular. Desert hiking is
best in the winter, with comfortable temperatures in the '70's. Summer
hiking in Baja is possible but early morning is the best time to hit
the trail. It is dangerous to hike alone, so please plan a trip with
fellow experienced hikers and contact an activity company to book a
guided trip.
In addition to incredible rock formations and vegetation, a hike
through the desert will allow you to see first hand the wildlife native
to this area. Jack rabbits and rattle snakes are not unusual - so wear
leather boots and make some noise on the trail. You'll need water,
sunscreen, and wear a hat. Guided hikes are recommended for novice to
advanced levels. Favorite areas are in the nearby La Laguna mountains
and fossil fields of the Cape region. Daytrips, overnight hikes and
camping trips are offered, allowing customized adventures for every
skill level. History and ecology are emphasized. Private, government
licensed guide service is also an option.

One of several highly recommended hikes is to the waterfalls you
will find just up the Arollo just north of Rancho El Gaspareņo along the
property line, approximately a 1 1/2 miles by horseback, hike or
ATV.

The falls, called cascadas, can be located by taking a gentle
uphill hilke through a dry river bed with a maze of boulders and rock
formations on each side. At the top you will discover pools of clear
water. Take bathing suits and a picnic lunch and enjoy a day at
this remote location.
BRING WATER
You must be especially careful when hiking in Baja's
desert lands. You will need twice as much water since it is so hot and
dry. Good sun protection is also essential. Make sure to have good
footwear, as you may encounter a rocky terrain in some places. The
temperature cools down quite a bit at night, so make sure to have enough
layers of clothing to be comfortable.
July through October
Rains have caused many floods which have been known to
wash out hiking trails. The best backpacking season is late fall, after
the rainy season, when the streams are full. The warmest temperatures
are usually in May and June but in the sierra may only reach around 80
degrees, unlike the high temperatures of the coastal plains and desert
at that time of year.
